The author, Fara Augustover, reads “Harmony Hears a Hoot” to the students at Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf, which Fara has visited yearly since 2015. Students write about their favorite part of the book, make owl puppets, and get their books signed by Fara. The older students present their own stories to Fara and discuss what it means to be an author.

Fara Augustover visits Hofstra University’s Deaf Education and American Sign Language Program (DEASL). She discussed working with individuals with hearing loss and in 2015, nominated a young girl with hearing aids to receive a custom American Girl with hearing aids from the DEASL. In 2016, she nominated a young boy with cochlear implants and his sister with hearing aids to receive custom Build-A-Bear stuffed animals from DEASL. In 2017, a young girl with cochlear implants is surprised by not only her new Build-A-Bear, but the Harry Potter themed event.

Fara reads “Harmony Hears a Hoot” to the students at Forest Park School as a part of their lesson on the five senses in 2016. Students were learning about authors, illustrators, and even some American Sign Language during Fara’s 2017 visit.
Fort Salonga Elementary School welcomes Fara and learns new vocabulary about hearing loss and related professionals.
Fara presents at the Just 4 Women Expo at Floral Park. This year’s keynote speaker was Miss New York 2015, Jaime L. Macchia, who works to bring attention to pediatric cancer research. The mission of the Expo is to inform, inspire, and enlighten women of all ages. It provides a day of fun and informative workshops designed for women while providing an opportunity to network and exchange ideas in a casual setting.
